You Know Your Overextended When.....

In a previous post I mentioned we have a new U.S. Army Infantry Company assigned to the CJTF. I was glad to see the old company go, they were a challenge. In fact, I felt like we should have given their services to the terrorist so they could bring them down from the inside. The new company is interesting, (there weapons handling safety skills not withstanding) they are a ceremonial unit. This is the first time they have deployed operationally since the Vietnam War. Supposedly, they receive all the same training as any other regular army unit (tell it to the guys in the guard tower!) so they should be good to go. So far they have been head and shoulders above the last Army infantry company.

I did a little research into their parent regiment's battle history during the War of Northern Aggression and was favorably impressed. They acquitted themselves valiantly by breaking and running just a little slower than the rest of the army at 1st Manassas, Gaines Farm, 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg (there but not engaged), Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, and at Gettysburg. At Gettysburg they were driven from the wheatfield by the men of Longstreet's Corps. Gettysburg marked the last major engagement for them (mostly because the regiment was decimated) however, they still maintained the strength to ensure the streets of New York ran red with blood during the 1863 draft riots.

The real question that begs to be asked is: Are we stretched so thin that we are to the point of sending ceremonial units to the front lines?

TO THE TYRANT NEVER YIELD
