The Law Of Unintended Consequence

The situation on the gulf coast was caused by two active components.

The first being Mother Nature. She can be a real bitch at times. Hurricanes pack a cubic butt ton of energy and that energy can hurt people and break things that are unfortunate to be in the way. They ain't caused by global warming or hair spray or SUVs or for that matter any other whacko crap of which I have been hearing 'bout in the media. They are a natural weather phenomena indigenous to our little blue planet. Like sh*t, they happen and are fairly regular for that matter (they also can result in a cruel nasty clean-up). Unlike sh*t they are only regular between the months of June and December in our special corner of this little blue planet. Sometimes hurricanes get really big and nasty and that, once again, is not a result of some imagined form of unnatural climate change oft'times referred to as global warming. Just ask my In-Laws about Hurricane Camille in '69 (My Bride, then my girlfriend, and I helped move her Grandmother from her home south of Mobile to their home in Texas round 'bout 1988 or '89. At the time Mother Raiford was STILL living in the FEMA provided trailer home provided to her after her house was destroyed by Hurricane Camille!) If '69 is too recent history then lets talk Andrew or channel the spirit of Bull Halsey and ask him where his destroyers went in 1945. Still to recent? How 'bout Galveston at the turn of the century. Still not enough to show a trend? O.K. then go asked the Koreans what happened to their Navy when they were trying to invade feudal Japan? History is full of records of storms like Katrina. Like I said, Nature can be a bitch at times. Much like when my Bride is at that special time of month, it is just best to stay way the hell clear of her path. It is so frustrating to me hearing Kent Brockman and his associates in the media harping on the "Katrina the Class V Kill Storm" as something unique and even more stupid...preventable. The only sure defense against a destructive force like a Hurricane is get out of its way. If you can't then one must ensure that they have the tools to survive in primitive and dangerous conditions for an indefinite amount of time. In case anyone missed the point, IT IS UP TO THE INDIVIDUAL CITIZEN IN THE STORMS PATH TO PREPARE TO SUSTAIN HIMSELF IN THE AFTERMATH. It is the clear responsibility of the local and state gummit to prepare to and MITIGATE the aftermath. To do this they must provide security, work to restore services, contain disease vector, distribute food/water, evacuate and treat the casualties. It is the federal gummit's to support, sustain and if necessary coordinate the efforts to mitigate the aftermath. I am a professional logistician by trade with subspecialties in distribution, transportation logistics and operational logistics analysis so I am fairly confident when I say I believe that material was making its way into the disaster area about as fast as possible given the assets, tyranny of distance and infrastructure available. That is why is so critically important that the individual citizen prepare to sustain himself. As much as logistitians wish we could, we just cant pull it out of our collective A$$. The 6Ps of the log dawg (for every swing'n crank for that matter) apply to all levels in this situation from the lowliest citizen to the almighty federal gummit: PRIOR PLANNING PREVENTS PISS POOR PERFORMANCE

The second active ingredient to the misery on the gulf coast (sadly, the only one that was preventable) is the nanny state mentality that has been cultivated by federal gummit since the 1930s. Much like wild animals, if you start giving them handouts, giving them shelter and food etc, then they lose the ability to sustain themselves in the wild. They become totally dependent on the hand of man for their basic needs. The word we use to describe such animals is "domesticated". The gummit has been working tirelessly for generations to domesticate the American people and it has been working. Their is a whole class of Americans who have abdicated their birthright as Americans to become the domesticated livestock of the government. The law of unintended consequences still always applies and on the Gulf Coast, it has manifested itself as the helplessness and lawlessness that has so horrified us. When the master is no longer available to sustain his domesticated livestock, chaos ensues.

People of America, WAKE UP! The blueprint of your future has been modeled on the streets of New Orleans. You are your own responsibility! If you allow the gummit or anyone to be your nursemaid, if you abdicate your most basic and precious responsibility, then you have surrendered you freedom and liberty. You have become nothing more than human chattel bound to a master with his own agenda.

That's all I have to say 'bout that.

TO THE TYRANT NEVER YIELD

Clear thinking, Ed, and good to see the rpoblem from the point of view of someone who actually moves things, rather than consumes things.

The secomd paragraph rings true, too, especially as nobody else has the guts to say it.

Nice. Unfortunately, too many people don't think like this. The South used to be a bastion of rugged individualism. Nowadays, if the President himself doesn't personally come to your rescue, then by golly he's a racist!
