Hardtack and Havoc

A private of the 1st Texas Volunteer Infantry Civil War Reenactor with a day job in Uncle Sugar's Navy trapped in the unholy land of New England...I wish I was still in Iraq.

Abject Terror

Wow today was a busy day. First day in the mobilization center. Found out where I will be in Iraq and a very little about what I will be doing. We are organized into a provisional battallion made up of multiple training teams that are dispersed. I was feeling pretty good about it until I found out I am in command of my team. As a Staff Corps officer I very rarely would have the opportunity for independent command, if ever. I have been in charge of departments on ships and shore, some of which were ten times as large as my Training Team but my focus was solely on logistics. Only a piece of the whole. I never had to be responsible for choking down the whole burrito. The idea that my first independent command is in a war zone literally scares the crap out me. In one minute my focus went from doing my personal best to support mission accomplishment to the well being and and safety of the people entrusted to me while we accomplish our mission. Most importantly, being worthy of people I am to lead. That is daunting and humbling.

TO THE TYRANT NEVER YIELD

Ah, but you have been trained by example, not only first-hand by all the officers you ever served under, but by the sterling examples of Lee and Jackson.

(Of course, come to think of it, Jackson quarreled with his subordinates and had dozens of soldiers shot, and Lee was in the habit of sending incompetent officers off to texas, so you might want to consider other mentors for this job.)

Now, go hug your kids!
