Hardtack and Havoc

A private of the 1st Texas Volunteer Infantry Civil War Reenactor with a day job in Uncle Sugar's Navy trapped in the unholy land of New England...I wish I was still in Iraq.

Pushing Rope

The frustration of the last couple of weeks has really been wearing on me. I have become the Mushroom…constantly in the dark and fed copious amount of crap. The schedule is constantly in flux and when word is actually passed…IT IS ALWAYS WRONG. Army training doesn’t exactly lend to my emotional well being as well. It is infuriating how the can take one single hour of training and cram it into six hours. They also present it at an elementary school level as well. My hand to God, I am surprised they didn’t take an hour today to review the freakin’ alphabet when they were teaching us how to fill out a Field Medical Card!!! The Army is a large clumsy beast and all their administrative and training process reflects that. The standard Army approach seems to be get everyone in one place, say like a rifle range with 20 lanes, and then cycle everyone through 20 at a time. The end result is you do get the X but you have effectively spent 30 minute actually training and 8 hours waiting. Sailors don’t respond well to that philosophy but Naval Officers are worse, including me. We are used to a higher level of independence and freedom of action than the Army will tolerate. Tempers tend to flare a little.

There are three ways to do anything: the right way, the wrong way, and the ARMY (!) WAY. Four years Regular Army and two years in the Army NG, and that's all I learned.

To quote a popular(?) ex-president, "I feel your pain."
